Happiness | Self-Help
What is happiness? Happiness is defined differently by different
people and different cultures but it is a desire throughout the world.
Some say happiness is a state of mind, others think it is controlled by
body chemisty, while others feel that it is connected to achievements.
Other experts think that happiness is all of this and much more - laughter
and a touch from someone special, having purpose in life, personal growth
and a confidence in the future.
Regardless of the definition, people who are not happy are
searching for ideas, courses and
tools to improve their happiness level. Often those who are feel they
are not happy are also suffering from depression. Understanding what makes
people happy - cheerful, positive, optimistic, content - is important
because it determines how fully people enjoy their lives. In addition,
being happy, or NOT happy, affects the health of people. It appears that
happy people are less affected by stress and tension - which is linked
to heart attacks and strokes. What are the keys to happiness?
"You can be happy instantly by wanting what you
already have."
from Diets Dont Work, by Bob Schwartz
Keys to Happiness
- Happiness comes from Within -
How do you handle misfortune? Those who can accept, observe and learn
when misfortune occurs with have a healthier perspective in life. Happinesss
has almost no correlation to social status, income, gender or skin color.
You have two choices in life - happy or unhappy. Choose happy.
- Strive for your Potential - Look
for opportunities - both big and small - to improve yourself.
- Exercise, Relax and feel Healthy
- Include simple or moderate exercise in your life. And do not overlook
the benefits of relaxation, affirmations,
prayer or walks with the family dog.
- Be Positive - Look for the positive
aspects of events in your life. Positive people are happier and more
enthusiastic about life. Positive and enthusiastic people attract friends
like a magnet. And positive expectations about the future will help
you deal with negative events such as loss of loved ones. Practice self-help
methods.
- Faith - Numerous studies have
demonstrated that those who participate with a religious organization
are happier than those who do not. Is there room for faith and worship
in your life?
- Social Network - Whether you are
single or married, a social network is important in your happiness.
If you are married, your spouse should be your best friend. We all need
good friends. Note: Eliminate negative people from your social network.
- Trust - Do you find it difficult
to trust others because of a prior divorce, betrayal or difficult childhood?
If so, you probably have a hard time developing close friends and getting
close to others. You can become more trusting of others by assuming
that their motivations are kind and honest.
- Greater Control - You can and
should take responsibility for your life. There will always be problems
but happy people evaluate their choices and find a solution. And happier
people control their reactions to negative events. Other people cannot
make you angry - only you can make yourself angry. If
you are patient in one moment of anger, you will avoid one hundred days
of sorrow. (Chinese proverb)
- Be Active - Get busy with dance
classes, cooking classes, outdoor sports, trips to the public library,
reading books, charitable events,
etc. Turn off that TV !!! Get active with your social network.
- Materialism is the Enemy - Materialism
is the enemy for happiness. It is a vicious circle of higher and higher
expectations. You do NOT need a new car every three years. Find satisfaction
with what you have.
- Generosity - Giving time, effort
and/or money to others in need can boost the happiness of the giver.
Look for opportunities where you can contribute to those less fortunate.
"Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living
by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." (Norman MacEwan)
- Forgiveness - Some psychologists
say one of the most important aspects of happiness is to be able to
"forgive easily." Try it.
- Humor - Find some in your life.
Laughter is an excellent medicine.
