  The Importance of Exercise

Recent studies have consistently shown that exercise, and overall physical health, can have dramatic benefits for depression patients. The connection between depression and one's physical health can be remarkable because positive results can be obtained quickly and at virtually no risk.

In one specific study a group of elderly patients diagnosed with major depression was divided into three groups. Only one group was instructed to exercise - the only treatment offerred. The "treatment" consisted of a brisk 30 minute walk or jog three times a week. After four months of this exercise treatment, more than 60% no longer met the criteria for a diagnosis of depression.

This particular study was conducted at Duke University and the results were published in the October 25, 1999 issue of "The Archives of Inernal Medicine." The basic conclusion that the researchers reached is that exercise may be just as effective as medication, and may be a better alternative for some patients.

Another study involving depression patients and exercise concluded that daily 30 minute walks are even better and faster-acting than a schedule of three times a week.

Other forms of exercise could prove to be equally beneficial. It is important to find an exercise activity that you can enjoy. One little known form is Feng Yuan Bu. It is a form of relaxation, stretching and exercise.

Conclusion: Exercise can be very beneficial to depressed individuals. Include it in your daily life.
